Bathroom Lighting

Bathroom lighting must support the mirror and the room

A bathroom needs comfortable general light and clear illumination for grooming. One bright ceiling source often creates shadows at the face, while a decorative wall light may not provide enough useful output on its own. Plan the mirror zone first, then add the ambient layer needed for safe movement and cleaning.

Lighting around a mirror

Fixtures placed beside a mirror can help light the face from both sides. A horizontal vanity light may work above the mirror when side space is limited, but its width, projection and beam direction should be checked against the mirror and ceiling. Mark the proposed centerline after the vanity, countertop and mirror heights are confirmed.

Color quality and visual comfort

Choose a color temperature that works with skin tones, finishes and nearby daylight. Warm white can feel relaxed; a slightly clearer neutral appearance may support detailed tasks. Avoid exposed high-brightness sources in direct sightlines, and verify dimming when the bathroom also needs a softer evening setting.

Location suitability comes before style

Humidity and proximity to water affect what can be installed. Do not infer a location rating from appearance or from the word “bathroom” in a collection. Confirm the exact product’s listed suitability, voltage, mounting method and local requirements with a qualified installer. If a listing does not state the required rating, do not place the fixture in a zone where that rating is necessary.

Compare bathroom wall sconces, marble wall sconces and glass wall sconces to narrow the choice by application and material.

Before ordering

  • Measure mirror width, vanity height, side clearances and fixture projection.
  • Confirm the exact location rating required for the installation zone.
  • Review light direction, source visibility, color temperature and dimming.
  • Check voltage, backplate dimensions and included mounting parts.

Use our Bathroom Vanity Lighting Guide for placement planning. Product-specific specifications and local electrical rules take priority.
